Anyone who has young children knows how annoying it is when they come home with glue on their clothes, whether they are marks from stick glue or smears of liquid white glue from the kind used in crafts. And, of course, the problem is even worse when it comes to the glue that we adults use when doing DIY, and a real disaster when it is contact glue.

We already talked about how to remove oil stains on fabrics, now we will talk about the dreaded glue.

Remove glue from fabrics

When it comes to stains on fabrics with a very strong glue, such as contact glue, the garment is usually considered lost. But if it is glue for children's use or for crafts, from the glue stick to liquid glue, we can do some tricks and home remedies. The first thing to do is let the glue dry, as this will make it easier to remove properly.

In no case is it recommended to wash the garment directly in the washing machine or by hand, unless it is a vinyl glue stain, which if it is not very sticky, it can usually be cleaned only with warm water. In all other cases, it is better to wait, as soap and water are often not enough and can make the situation worse. Among the simplest home remedies to remove glue stains on clothes are the following:

Heat to remove glue

The lightest glue stains are left over from removing store stickers from clothing. These stains are not very important, and a little heat is enough to be able to remove these traces of glue. Ideally, place a sheet of absorbent paper on the ironing board and place the part of the garment that has glue on it before applying a little dry heat (no steam) to the other part of the garment with the iron.

Salt and lemon

This solution is for small or slightly embedded stains:

Vinegar

If the above has not worked, you can repeat the operation with vinegar, which has a very powerful degreasing action. Vinegar should be used in a 50/50 solution with water. With this solution and a cloth you can rub a little on the stain. We share a post on how to make homemade vinegar in a simple way, in case you want to apply it as a multipurpose for the home.

Alcohol and Marseille soap

For vinyl glue stains, which is the one used in carpentry and wall paper gluing, the best solution is to use alcohol and Marseille soap combined at 50%.

freeze clothes

If we put the garment in the freezer, very low temperatures will condense it and allow it to be taken off more easily, leaving only a few remains that will be much easier to remove with the previous methods.

Acetone

This is a slightly more complex method than the previous ones, for which you will need several products:

The steps to follow are those:

Solvents for glue

The same procedure carried out with acetone can also be carried out with a glue solvent that is sold in some stationery stores. However, it must be borne in mind that these are quite aggressive products that can damage clothes if they are not handled very carefully. Therefore, you must read the instructions for use carefully and try to be very careful that they do not directly touch the fabric.

some extra tricks

It is important to preserve the safety of the tissues as much as possible. To do this, when liquid substances are applied, it is best to put a cotton pad or absorbent paper behind the area that is going to get wet to prevent the products from remaining on the fabric. The longer the time the fabric is wet, the greater the damage that can be caused to the garment.
