UPA denounces that Carrefour devalues the price of Huelva strawberries using it as a promotional claim | Heconomia.es - Economic and business information on Huelva

UPA Huelva has been denouncing for several campaigns the use of strawberries as a claim product by Carrefour, a practice that has been reproduced in recent years and does a disservice to the quality image of the product, as well as to the effort and the working hours of our farmers, who put their heritage at risk by growing a high-quality product, so that the price is later thrown at the point of sale, conveying to consumers the feeling of a devalued product.

The initiative of the French multinational, which appears, for example, on the cover of a provincial print media dated 02/7/2021, which indicates a front-page, full-color advertising commitment by Carrefour to spread the promotion , offers the first Kg of strawberry at €1.89 and the 2nd Kg at €0.57, that is, at €1.23/kg if the customer takes 2Kg. This is especially bloody at a time when there is very low production due to a delay in the campaign due to the cold and a reasonable price per Kg was being paid, so not only is the message of a devalued product transmitted to society, but also It also conveys that the competition or small businesses overcharge their customers, a message that is not true.

At this point in the problem, it is already known that this is nothing more than a mere strategy to fill the hypermarket using strawberries as a promotional product. What seems so simple not only hurts our farmers, but also seriously harms small and medium-sized businesses that will also be affected by decreasing sales while the offer lasts. UPA Huelva understands that at a time when the Pandemic has caused irreparable damage to thousands of self-employed workers in traditional neighborhood businesses, offers like this contribute to sinking the sector further and should obtain majority social rejection.

UPA Huelva understands that Carrefour is once again losing the opportunity to respect the work of its agricultural suppliers by paying a fair price for their work. This type of practice has already led thousands of farmers from all over Spain to protest in 2020 for fair prices at source, but as has already been denounced on many occasions, strawberries and red berries suffer from speculation by certain links in the supply chain. value that make our farmers unable to raise their heads.

UPA Huelva sends the same message as in previous years: we will not rest in denouncing speculation with agricultural and livestock products, giving names and surnames to whoever does it. If Carrefour wants to launch attractive offers, there is a wide variety of hygiene, sanitary or any other type of products with which it can attract customers, but not with Huelva strawberries.

UPA Huelva understands that Carrefour should learn from other supermarket chains in the same strip, such as Lidl, which has reached an agreement with UPA Jaén to agree on the minimum purchase price for farmers at 2.6 euros /a of the kilo of olive oil from traditional farms, thus giving a fair remuneration to these farmers and which has also been praised by the minister Luis Planas himself. An example of how to do things that could be perfectly comparable to any agricultural or livestock sector. Unfortunately, this is not the case of Carrefour with the strawberry from Huelva.
