The UN also works from A Coruña

That being the case, and with a good handful of jobs that prove his professional worth, for a few months now the A Grela industrial estate, where he lives, has been a marked point on the United Nations map. «In my case, I am hired for a specific project, but the moment you enter the UN you are already part of their database and, if they are happy, they usually call you to be part of other initiatives that arise », comments Jéssica, who puts - surely many times in her pajamas - a grain of sand to change the world.

Three working days

Unlike her friend, who told her about this type of work and who is now going to work in Nairobi as a consultant, Jéssica carries out her work remotely. And the word committed is not trivial because, as she herself explains, "they give me a very specific schedule of what they want from me every week, and in this way I can manage myself as I want to, also, combine it with my other jobs, because in addition to Mexas I am working with some brands from A Coruña». His schedule is organized in such a way that he meets on Mondays by videoconference with two girls who are in Jordan and, afterwards, he usually dedicates himself from Wednesday to Friday to the crux of the matter: a platform through which young Arabs are taught to start a sustainable business. His job, of course, is to make this tool a visible, attractive and convincing entity to reach as many people as possible. "It's just about changing the focus and looking at the context, but you could do this at the ticketing company."

Despite this analogy, the truth is that Jéssica later explains that she has run into certain and natural obstacles when developing her strategies. «Gender equality is still a long way off, the way of understanding life is different from Europe and to that we must add that they do not use the same social networks with which I am used to working. These guys still use Facebook a lot." This initiative was born because in the Arab countries, as this consultant explains, there are one hundred million young people between the ages of 17 and 29; so to face the evident lack of opportunities, the UN wants to launch a platform that allows these people to undertake, their companies have social and environmental objectives.

An unknown exit

This point is entirely relevant and Jessica believes that it was even definitive when it came to hiring her. “I think they liked me that I was knowledgeable and interested in conscious marketing. Because you can do marketing for a multinational to generate more profits or for people to live better. In my case, I was always interested in the latter, although almost no one pays attention to it. Now it is beginning to sound in the United States, but I discovered it when I set up Mexas ».

«Although I studied Advertising —he studied at UVigo's Pontevedra faculty—, in the degree no one talks to you about this type of outings, being one more alternative in the job market; social marketing exists and, in reality, it seems that this type of study always has to be consistent with capitalist values”, comments herculina. This young woman still has time, by the way, to use her personal Instagram account to value Spanish and Galician companies that have brand objectives with which she agrees.

Her honeymoon with the UN is about to end, but she is more than willing to continue being part of this great family. "I hope they call me for new initiatives," she says. This, in addition to coming in handy to fatten the resume —this marketing expert acknowledges that the opportunity will open unthinkable doors for her at another time—, is most sweet because, without going into specific data, "the UN does not pay anything bad », he points out.

Is there anything negative? Also. The dreaded and tedious bureaucracy. If in a mundane job anyone has to deal with insufferable chains of emails and zillions of signatures from superiors to advance a project, you don't have to be too daring to imagine what happens if you work for the UN. «This is because they have to have everything documented and justified. What is each money spent on and why? And then, of course, since it is such an important body, some processes take a long time and are expensive to carry out, but this is the only negative thing that occurs to me to comment on; Otherwise, it's all amazing."
