Homemarriage → «We were going to go...

«We were going to go to Australia for our honeymoon, and we ended up in Aguilar de Campoo»

When their plans were blown up in March and they had no choice but to postpone the wedding, they never imagined that we would still reach July under these circumstances. However, even with all the restrictions that fly over our day to day, canceling the wedding was never an option. “I said: ‘This is taking a lot of time out of my life, if we have to delay it for next year, since we already had the court date, we got married and ate with the family and it was over. We'll have the party when we can, "explains María, who confesses that, although they tried to handle it as best as possible, they went through several phases. "When we had to cancel the honeymoon trip, that we were going to Australia, it was quite a downer," he says.

Camping van

They couldn't travel the more than 15,000 kilometers that separate Bilbao from Oceania as planned, but they didn't stay home either. They took the van and road and blanket. It has nothing to do with landing in Melbourne, but Aguilar de Campoo (Palencia) also has its charm. From the town where the most famous cookie factory in Spain is located, they went to Huelva, from there to Talavera de la Reina (Toledo), because they had a wedding, and after a few days in Denia they took a ferry and crossed to Ibiza . «Very varied. It's not Australia, but it's sunny, we're dedicating ourselves to eating well, we can't complain," says the bride.

Covid would thwart their plans, but they have a lot to thank it for. If there is no confinement, they could not tell that a DJ married them on the balcony of his house with the neighbors of the neighborhood as the only witnesses. Of course, then the story spread like wildfire and they ended up appearing on television. «We have a neighbor who is a DJ and after the applause at eight in the evening, every day he went out to play music. People sent him recommendations, he put happy birthday when they asked him... he encouraged and encouraged ", María acknowledges.

In one of those, Ibon's friends organized a cyber bachelor party for him, and one of the tests consisted of going up to the DJ's floor to convince him to put on a song and have a shot. From there they began to talk more with him, especially through social networks, to such an extent that he proposed to declare them husband and wife on the day of the original wedding. "We imagined that just as he wished happy birthday, he would say: 'Long live the couple! María and Ibon would have gotten married today.' And that's it." But not. He was up to something bigger, though they had no idea. Throughout the week in the musical session he was in charge of warning what was to come. «And on Saturday.....». And the neighbors replied to the cry of "wedding, wedding!". María and Ibon began to imagine what they could be messing with, but it wasn't until the very day that they were really aware. «He brought down some speakers, some microphones, a script with the moments in which we had to intervene... He spoke with almost all the neighbors to decorate the balconies, which by the way appeared in gala dresses, with headdresses, a girl He even did a photocall, another threw some cakes out the window at us. A very crazy thing. He even notified the television and we appeared on the news. The neighbors really wanted things like that, to cheer you up a bit, because they were people we didn't know at all, "he says. So much was the love they received the day they were supposed to get married that María and Ibon responded by leaving some thank you notes on the portals where they thanked them for making that day unforgettable. "The truth is that we have laughed a lot, and we have calculated that we have been married five times in total," he says with a laugh.

The following days the neighbors kept shouting at them through the windows, and this is how María and Ibon have become, without wanting to, the most famous boyfriends in Bilbao. Oh, the snorkeling was not missing as planned in the original plan. They traded the Great Barrier Reef for the minnows of the Balearic Islands.
