Change in the order of surnames, simple procedure in the CDMX

Changing the order of surnames is a simple procedure. Those interested only need to take an original birth certificate or certificate, an official identification and proof of address.

On October 25, 2017, the reform of article 58 of the Civil Code entered into force. It highlights the relevance of women's role in the family, allowing them to give their paternal surname to their children, as the first option. The legal advisor and legal service of the capital government explained that the change of last name in people is a simple procedure, since there is an antecedent, which allows the identification of people.

“We know that all life, the whole history of Mexico was paternal surname and then maternal.Obviously this generated a topic of discrimination, the role of women was always secondary, it was never given the importance she has always had, there is always a trace, of what there was before. The original is, ”said Vicente Lopantzi, legal and legal service advisor of the CDMX.

Cambio en el orden de los apellidos, trámite sencillo en la CDMX

In the case of children who have just been born, the modification to the last name must be in the consent of the parents, the only condition that the authorities put is that the following children respect the new order of the last names.

“Yes, but there are rules. For example, that he is the first child, born of this relationship to which the last name in the first maternal and then paternal order, and that the subsequent children of this same relationship carry the same order. Why it is done so, for a issue of filiation and legal certainty. If it was allowed in the second child or later account, the order of the first paternal and then maternal surnames will be incorporated, legal insecurity would be generated, because the same children would not know if your brother is your brother or is your cousin ”, explained Vicente Lopantzi, legal advisor and legal service of the CDMX.

From October 25 to date, in the Civil Registry 24 families have decided to change the order of their last names, putting the maternal before the paternal.
