How the order of surnames can be changed with the new law

The Ministry of Justice and the Civil Registry Service announced that on Tuesday the new Law of Changes in the Order of the Surnames will begin to govern, which allows people to ask first surname the maternal and then the paternal.

In particular, the law gives the possibility to parents to establish the order of the surnames of their first son or daughter, which will extend to the rest of the children in common who enroll later.

In all birth inscriptions that are made from today, the person who enrolls the newborn, to invest the order of the surnames, must present a “agreement form” signed by both parents.

Meanwhile, foreign persons may only request the change of the order of their last names for the purposes of the issuance or for the rectification of their Chilean documents, complying with the requirements established in this Law, in addition to having definitive residence and the birth registered in Chile.

The National Director of the Civil Registry, Sergio Mierzejewski, said the service added to his online schedule system the process to request time to change the order of the last names.There will be 7 thousand monthly appointments in 372 offices throughout the country.
