They'll certify centers that will test DNA on irresponsible parents.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras-A genetic material test will determine the paternity of men who do not want to recognize their children.

The evidence shall be ordered by the Family Court where there is doubt or the father refuses to recognize his child and the child's mother demands forced recognition.

This is stipulated in the Regulations of the Special Act on Responsible Motherhood and Parenthood, drawn up by the Human Rights Secretariat, to which HERALDO had access.

An amendment made by the National Congress to this law provides that the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) shall act ex officio with those irresponsible parents.

Certificarán centros que harán prueba de ADN a padres irresponsables

The regulation states that centres where DNA tests will be carried out will be certified, with which they will be corroborated if they share ties of consanguinity. The General Directorate of Forensic Medicine of the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) will be responsible for conducting the tests. Other public or private laboratories may carry out the analyses, provided that they are certified by the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Once the DNA test is performed, the result must be delivered within 10 working days to the courts requesting it.

The genetic scientific test can be applied to a single parent or both, to siblings of father and mother, as well as to other family members who share the maternal and paternal line. The document states that the evidence will be appropriate in the event of the father's death. The law provides that when the father is not located for subpoena in court, the action shall be addressed to his legal representative or to his close relatives.

According to data from the National Registry of Persons (RNP), there are 34,732 children in Honduras who were not recognized by their parents.
